Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman – The Death Gate Cycle.

07/07/2015 By paucoes Leave a Comment

These are the titles of the seven books of this series: 1- Dragon Wing, 2- Elven Star, 3- Fire Sea, 4- Serpent Mage, 5- Hand of Chaos, 6- Into the Labyrinth and 7- The Seventh Gate.

There was an ancient war between the Sartan and the Patryn, two powerful and ancient races. The Sartan won and they imprisoned all the Patryn in a Labyrinth where it was almost impossible to escape, but there was one Patryn, named Xar, who escaped and helped the others to escape. All of them live in a place called the Nexus.

Haplo, is one of the other Patryns that escaped. He’s sent, by Xar, on a trip to the four realms, created by the Sartan, with the purpose of causing chaos. Those realms are inhabited by the mensch (humans, elves and dwarves), in some worlds they live in peace, but in other worlds some of them are slaves. To reach those realms, Haplo, must go across the Death Gate. He’s never alone, Dog (a magical dog), is always with him. The first world is Arianus, its element is the air, the second world is Pryan its element is the fire, the third world is Abarrach its element is the stone and the fourth world is Chelestra its element is the water.

In those realms, Haplo will meet characters of all the races like Limbeck and Jarre (dwarves), Hugh The Hand and Rega (humans), Paithan and his family (elves), Zifnab (a crazy and funny wizard), Alfred (a Sartan that’s not bad), etc. He’ll face terrible creatures like the Tytans or deadly snakes and dragons. Well, he’ll have a lot of work to do to accomplish his goal and he’ll learn many things from those he’ll meet.

I think that this is a very good series. It has seven books, but none of them seemed boring to me. Each one of them has action and a lot of imagination. The worlds are perfectly described so you can imagine them without trouble, each one has its own problems and its own rules and ways of living for the different races. I have my favorite worlds, Pryan and Chelestra. The world that I thought was horrible was Abarrach.

Haplo is the main character, but in some books the story isn’t told by him and there are other interesting characters. I liked very much Zifnab, his occurrences always made me smile or laugh; and I loved Dog, he’s so loyal, tender, lovely and awesome.

This is a series that you must read, it’s a great and original story. I enjoyed it very much and I never stopped being immersed in it.
