I’ve only read the three first books of the series: 1- I Am Not a Serial Killer, 2- Mr. Monster and 3- I Don’t Want to Kill You. I’ll read the other ones: 4- The Devil’s Only Friend and 5- Over Your Dead Body. There’s another story named Next of Kin, is kind of an introduction to the next three books, I think I won’t read that one. And the sixth book will be published in 2017, it’s named Nothing Left to Lose.
John Wayne Cleaver is young and a sociopath. He lives under some rules, that he created, to avoid hurting others despite he dreams of killing everyone. He calls his killer side Mr. Monster. He lives with his mom and he helps in the mortuary, the family’s business, that way he controls Mr. Monster.
In the place he lives, Clayton County, some men are being brutally murdered and they all are missing organs. John begins to create a profile for this killer based on his knowledge of serial killers and what he sees in the corpses. He also begins to hunt him.
With this hunt, he’ll realize that there are demons in this world and he’s able to kill them.
The demon of the second book is a women torturer, and in the third book the demon is named Nobody and she has strange abilities.
One of the reasons I’ve liked this series is John’s eternal fight against Mr. Monster, I think it’s a very original idea. He’s a sociopath who can live in some kind of control and he’s considered a hero for saving everyone from the terrible serial killers. At the beginning he couldn’t feel empathy, but at the end of the third book he’s sure of feeling something. The third book is a little tragic.
Another reason is that he knows a lot about serial killers and that’s interesting. I like his rules, especially the one that establishes he must say something nice to a person when he’s having bad thoughts about that person.
I’m adding this series to my favorites list.
